Origin: Native Thai
Root Meaning: “To Strike.” This is a native Thai word. In ancient times, night guards would strike a metal gong or a bell to signal the hour. The word ตี 📣 mimics the action of hitting that instrument.
While the daytime hours were marked by the “Moong” (โมง 📣) sound of a large gong, the early morning hours (1 AM – 5 AM) were marked by the sharp “strike” of a metal plate.
ตีหนึ่ง 📣 (dtii-nueng): Strike One = 1:00 AM.
ตีห้า 📣 (dtii-hâa): Strike Five = 5:00 AM.
