Digging into Thai words and culture

I live in Thailand and take an interest in its culture. I’m learning the Thai language and love digging into its roots. Here I share my linguistic discoveries, insights, and simply everything I find curious. My wife Mistine helps me in my learning.

Why did we choose the name PhumPanya (ภูมิปัญญา) for the site?

Phum (ภูมิ), meaning “Land” or “Soil” + Panya (ปัญญา), meaning “Wisdom” or “Insight.” = Grounded Wisdom” – the collective intelligence.

When you learn a language, you tap into the collective wisdom of a nation — and discover countless curiosities hidden beneath the surface of the everyday, in the depths of time.

What I'm curious about, and what I plan to (gradually) share here

Reading the Culture

I’m curious about how language shapes Thai culture and mindset. Take ใจ (jai, heart): hundreds of emotions are built around one word. Often the Western take on an idea and the Thai reality are two different things. That gap is where the interesting stuff lives.

Finding the Roots

Thai grew out of several older languages — Sanskrit, Pali, Khmer, Chinese. Tracing a word back to its root often explains it better than any definition. It also tells you where a word belongs: a royal ceremony, formal business, or a chat on the street.

Visualizing the Meaning

Thai is full of metaphors and compound words. I like breaking them down visually — a picture often shows the logic faster than a paragraph.

Down the Rabbit Hole of ฐ: One Thai Letter’s Journey Across Eurasia

I do love digging through the seams of Thai vocabulary. You sit down, say, to read about the letter — tɔ̌ɔ tǎan, the 16th consonant of the Thai alphabet. And several hours later you find yourself far from Thailand, gleefully time-traveling back and forth across Eurasia. Welcome down the rabbit hole.
