Origin: Sanskrit
It was coined in the 1930s by Phraya Upakit Silapasan, drawing from the Sanskrit word Svastika (well-being).
By combining ‘Good’ with ‘Existence,’ สวัสดี literally translates to ‘Good Existence’ or ‘May you have a good life.’
Transliteration: khun-khruu glàao sà-wàt-dii nák-riian thúk-khon nai dtawn-cháo gàawn rôoem riian
Translation: The teacher greets all the students in the morning before starting the lesson.
