Origin: Sanskrit
The word นาที (naa-thii) derives from the Sanskrit Nāḍī, meaning “tube” or “hollow stalk,” referring to the hole in ancient water clocks like calibrated coconut shells. In traditional Thai astrology, the full 24-hour day was divided into 60 units, making one na-thii exactly 24 modern minutes long. When Thailand adopted Western timekeeping, the term was repurposed to maintain the logic of a “60th part,” but its scale shifted from 1/60th of a day to 1/60th of an hour.
