Origin: Native Thai
Root Meaning: “The Sound of the Gong.” This is a native Thai word that is onomatopoeic—it mimics the deep, resonant “moong” (โหม่ง 📣) sound made by striking a large metal gong to announce the hours of the day.
1. Telling Daytime Hours
เก้าโมงเช้า 📣 (gâo moong cháo) — 9:00 AM (9 o’clock morning).
สี่โมงเย็น 📣 (sìi moong yen) — 4:00 PM (4 o’clock evening/afternoon).
2. Asking for the Time
กี่โมงแล้ว? 📣 (gìi moong láeo?) — What time is it? (Literally: How many gongs already?)
3. Counting Hours (Informal)
อีกสองโมง 📣 (ìik sǎawng moong) — In two [more] hours.
Note: While ชั่วโมง (chûa-moong) is the formal word for “hour,” in casual speech, people often just say โมง.
