Origin: Native Thai
Root Meaning: ทะเล (Thá-lee) — Vast Waters
This is the “everyday” word. It’s the water you can see from the shore. In Thai culture, ทะเล 📣 is a place of relaxation, food, and travel. It refers to both the body of saltwater and the general “seaside” destination.
Usage: Casual. Use this when you are going on vacation, eating seafood, or talking about the “Gulf of Thailand” (อ่าวไทย 📣).
Example: “ไปเที่ยวทะเลกันไหม? 📣” (bpai thîiao thá-lee gan mǎi?) — “Shall we go to the sea/seaside?”
Beyond the literal Vast Waters, Thá-lee is used in: 1) ทะเลทราย 📣 (Thá-lee saai—Sea of Sand): A desert. 2) ชายทะเล 📣 (Chai thá-lee—Hem of the Sea): The seaside or coastal edge.
