In Thai, prepositions are fixed position markers that reveal how Thai culture maps the world.
Understanding left in Thai and right in Thai isn’t just about directions. It’s about seeing how Thai connects space to geography (north/south), the human body (face/back), and surfaces vs. interiors.

The Compass Connection

เหนือ 📣 (nǔea) | Above / North
In the Thai mental map, “above” is the same word for “North.” When you go to Chiang Mai, you go “up North.”

ใต้ 📣 (dtâai) | Under / South
“Below” is the same word for “South.” Going to Phuket or Hua Hin? You’re going “down South” (ลงใต้).

The Body Connection

ข้างหน้า 📣 (khâang-nâa) | In front of / Front side
Thai uses the word for your “face” to describe space in front of an object. What you face = what is in front.

ข้างหลัง 📣 (khâang-lǎng) | Behind / Back side
Thai uses the word for your “back” to describe space behind an object. Your back = what’s behind you.

Surface vs. Interior

บน 📣 (bon) | On
Strictly for being on top of a surface. The cat sits on the branch (touching it).

ใน 📣 (nai) | In
Refers to space inside. The squirrel hides in the tree trunk (enclosed).
